People profile: Hazel Simpson, General Manager Supply and Operations

07 March 2019

Career Journey:

I have been working for over 30 years and during that time, experienced three different businesses including 7-Eleven. I have lived and worked in Edinburgh, London, Sydney and Melbourne, predominantly in the retail sector and across a variety of roles that include human resources, strategic account management, sales, operations and logistics.

My current role allows me to draw on many of my previous technical experiences, and the most amazing part of my role today is that I am working with teams who work at 7-Eleven because we want to make a positive difference every day.

What is the best thing about being a woman?

We have a much wider and more diverse range of shoe options oh, and we have the ability to create life….just saying!

What inspires you?

In each new work notebook I write three things:

  • Cultivate an attitude of gratitude

  • Take action, even when it’s scary

  • Have a powerful and inspiring ‘why’

What do you think are the biggest challenges for women when trying to move up or develop their careers?

Women have a tendency to want to achieve ALL the necessary qualifications and requirements for the next role or promotion which can result in missing the opportunity as they perfect their credentials. Building a network of relationships that include both a mentor and a sponsor provide a trusted channel of advice and can assist with canvassing your intention to apply for the next opportunity. In my career, the roles I enjoyed and felt a strong sense of fulfilment were when I took the role on with something to learn and created a healthy challenge.

What does the theme of #balanceforbetter this International Women’s Day mean to you?

Collective action and shared responsibility for driving a gender balanced world is key for the women of our future, like my 7 year old daughter Indiana.
