People profile: Joanne Hodgson, Corporate Store Manager and Relief Retail Business Manager

07 March 2019

Career Journey

I have been back with 7-Eleven since 2016. One of my highlights was in 2017 when I won the Women in Retail Convenience Award for Store Operator of the year. From then I have achieved a lot. I have been working in various Retail Business Manager relief roles in both the Franchise and Corporate spaces, following this role I will be staying with the operations team to help with the CBD transformations until June.

What is the best thing about being a woman?

I love being a woman in this day and age. Having the opportunity to have a career so late in life has been challenging and rewarding. I never dreamt that when my daughter was 14 that I would have to look after us both after the loss of my husband.  It was not on my radar to do this. I have surprised myself with what I have achieved in such a short time. In my work I managed to achieve great results in my store reviews, coached and trained new managers and stepped up to Retail Business Manager roles for the franchise and corporate districts, whilst helping my new manager to run the Tullamarine store in my absence.

What inspires you?

I would have to quote my dad who instilled great values in me, “Always treat people with the upmost respect and it will be returned 10 fold. Always give 100% in whatever you do.”

What do you think are the biggest challenges for women when trying to move up or develop their careers?

The challenges for women in this day in age would be wage equality, and earning the same respect for what they do.

What does the theme of #balanceforbetter this International Women’s Day mean to you?

I believe for women and men we need equal balance in our lives whether it be in daily life or work.
